My Non-Negotiables During Overwhelming Seasons

As we are almost one month into 2026, the initial rush of “new year motivation” has settled, and real life has started to creep back in. The routines aren’t perfect anymore, the goals feel heavier, and for many of us, stress is no longer hypothetical. This is usually the point where overwhelm sneaks in quietly.

Law school and post-grad can be a lot, especially in certain overwhelming seasons like final exams, bar prep, or job interviews. To help calm this feeling, it is important to implement some non-negotiables in your schedule.

Overwhelming seasons require structure. Because we often experience decision fatigue, and emotional instability during these hectic times, there is a danger of abandoning yourself. Letting go of you is no way to endure high-stress periods, as it will take much longer to recover when the dust settles.

So what makes a good non-negotiable? A good non-negotiable is that it is simple, low-effort, and repeatable. An easy way to think about your non-negotiables is ask yourself: “What are the smallest actions that help me feel like myself again?”

For me, my three main non-negotiables are: (1) 5 minute meditation; (2) Daily movement (even if it’s just a walk); (3) Limiting screen time one hour before bed.

Having daily meditation and movement, and limiting screen time enables me to feel grounded regardless of external stressors. Plus, if I have a bad day or feel unproductive, I always get to “check off” those three things as accomplishments.

With that, it’s equally important to acknowledge what I intentionally let go of during overwhelming seasons, like aesthetic routines and social pressure. You don’t need every habit to look pretty to be effective and you do not need to force plans or explain your absence.

Letting go of these things creates space for what actually matters: staying regulated, present, and intact.

To build your own non-negotiables, pick 3-5 max so they stay sustainable, tie them to regulation rather than instant gratification or results, adjust them by season, and finally, protect them gently.

Non-negotiables are not rules meant to control you. They’re boundaries meant to support you. Remember: when everything feels chaotic, this is how you come back to yourself!
